Did you know that Iowa’s preschools and daycares follow the same radon testing rules as Iowa’s public schools? Energy Association of Iowa Schools (EAIS) is HHS-approved to train Iowa’s PK-12 public school districts how to test for radon themselves through our School Radon Training & Support System©. In our work with currently almost 160 Iowa public school districts, we receive many radon questions and confusion specific to Iowa preschools and daycares.
Though different testing requirements existed in the past, in November of 2022, regulations for preschools and daycares were brought in line with Iowa’s K-12 public school testing requirements: every five years if radon levels are below the EPA’s action level of 4.0 picocuries/liter and every two years if above 4.0 and subsequently mitigated.
If the licensed Childcare Center is located within an Iowa public school district building, or is operated externally in collaboration with an Iowa public school district, radon testing is the school district’s responsibility per Iowa Chapter 280.32 School Radon Safety requirements. Additional testing by childcare staff is not necessary.
