THE SKY’S THE LIMIT WITH THE NEW-AND-IMPROVED BUILDING OPERATOR PATHWAY (BOP) FOR IOWA INCOMING HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS!

 If you like hands-on challenges, making people safe, caring for your surroundings, and keeping equipment working, you could be a great Building Operator. We are looking for 2 – 3 students per school district to learn along with a current building operator at your school or local industry. Work alongside your team to build relevant skills and industry-knowledge, so that you can be prepared for a career post-graduation. Let your guidance counselor know you want to be on your school’s BOP team!

RECEIVE GREAT BENEFITS AS A STUDENT PARTICIPATING IN THE BUILDING OPERATOR PATHWAY

Be qualified for a job as soon as you graduate.

Post-graduation starting pay around $40k.

Free college credit while enrolled in high school.

Complete a 10-hour OSHA training card that looks great on a resume.

Hands-on experience at your school, during school hours.

HOW DOES THE BUILDING OPERATOR PATHWAY PROGRAM WORK?

A few days a week, you will have Building Operator Pathway (BOP) class, either virtually or in person. On the other days you will work in an internship with a building operator from your school or local industry. The rest of each day will be normal.

Since the classes below will take two years to fit into your school schedule, a two-year commitment is needed. Some of your classes and topics covered will look like:

  • Industrial Heating and Cooling
  • Efficient Lighting Fundamentals
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Employment Skills such as Communication
  • Teamwork and Networking
  • Basic Electrical Fundamentals
  • Radon Safety and Testing
  • Basic Construction Skills
  • Customer Service
  • Construction Safety & Health/OSHA-10

Enjoy field trips to learn more about the industry and an annual trip to Des Moines to meet your fellow program participants in person!

 

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BUILDING OPERATOR PATHWAY STUDENT

In learning teams of 2-3 BOP students and your school’s facility manager, your schedule will look something like this:

All college credits earned in conjunction with the BOP will be awarded by Southwestern Community College and recorded on a student’s official college transcript. If a student chooses to continue her/his education, they may request that an official transcript be sent to her/his desired transfer institution for the evaluation of transfer credit.
