With winter Radon Testing Season fast approaching (and only nine testing months remaining before the July 1, 2027 deadline), our Energy Association of Iowa Schools (EAIS) Radon Team has been hard at work training school districts to test for radon. The final kickoff workshop of 2024 will be held at Heartland AEA in Johnston on October 29 and is already sold out.
With three trainings down and one to go (new schools in-person and returning schools via Zoom), this year EAIS will train and support 65 school districts with its School Radon Training & Support System (SRTSS). Through this process over 4,000 radon test kits will be distributed and deployed across the state of Iowa by school #RadonFighters who have completed their training with EAIS.
Why is radon testing important? Odor-free, tasteless, and invisible, radon is a naturally occurring gas in the environment and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in the United States. Also, in Iowa, testing is the law. Iowa Code 280.32 requires Iowa’s public schools to test for and fix any radon elevations in all attendance centers by 2027 and every five years thereafter. Radon testing helps to #PreventLungCancer.
With its SRTSS, EAIS has Iowa public schools’ back. “I can’t thank (EAIS) enough for the support, guidance, training, and holding of hands…as we work through radon issues,” said AEA Supervisor of Operations Jamie Reid. “You have been our life saver!”
